Now put feelings aside for a minute: If you are Hamas, why would you accept a deal when regardless of what you demand, Israel is going to pound Rafah anyway?

Netanyahu is simply creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The thing a lot of people don’t talk about is that leverage is most effective when coupled with addressing very real fears of the parties in question. I studied conflict resolution in grad school and my favourite prof always emphasised this, a giant of mediation, Chester Crocker.

Great point from Kevin. This is why French Jewish friends of mine can genuinely feel Jewish existence is existentially threatened bc of this war when it is clearly not. It doesn’t matter what we outside observers think. We must deal with what ppl feel. That is strategic empathy.

I commend and admire Mehdi Hasan for taking a stand in a town (my former home) where shunning a “big event” to see and be seen is practically sacrilege.
