Today ESB 5033, "Kimberly Bender's law," was unanimously passed by the House--and therefore the entire Legislature--and is now headed to Governor Jay Inslee for signature. Hands raised to Taylor Mirfendereski of KING 5 News and Sen. Mike Padden (R-Spokane) for catalyzing this carceral reform.

In just a few moments, Governor Jay Inslee will sign “Kimberly Bender’s law,” a bill prompted by my KING 5 News investigation about a sexually abusive Forks jail guard. The new law will increase accountability for corrections officers who sexually abuse inmates.
Kimberly Bender’s family brought photos of their daughter to share with Governor Jay Inslee this AM as he signed “Kimberly Bender’s Law.” Kimberly died by suicide after reporting her jail guard sexually harassed her. Her family says she would’ve been proud to see positive change.
