Experimental evidence of super strong magnetic fields in heavy ion collisions. Such fields can actually be sustained in the highly degenerate core of some neutron stars for millions of years. They might have been generated from the collision of two parent neutron stars.

📢 The recent work of my PhD student about observational evidence of gapless superfluidity in neutron stars has been recently accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters arxiv.org/abs/2403.07740

🆕ESA’s Integral sees, for the first time, how nuclear explosions 💥 on a neutron star feed its jets. Will this help us figure out jets in all sorts of astronomical objects? 🤔 Find out here 👉esa.int/Science_Explor…

Le premier magnetar extragalactique découvert par ESA Integral dans la galaxie M82 ! Un événement transitoire unique : ces étoiles à neutrons au champ magnétique hyper puissant n’étaient connues que dans notre galaxie. ▶️ urlz.fr/qsCH @TNGTelescope ESA XMM-Newton

Yesterday our Columbia Physics Department colleague Mal Ruderman passed at 97. He was a great scientist - a legend in the field of neutron star physics - and among the kindest and humblest people I've met. He was active in our department well into his 90s and will be missed.

Uncovering an exotic phase of matter called a supersolid came down to the perfect spin cycle. Researchers used a magnetic field to stir atoms about 50 times a second —fast enough to trigger vortices but gentle enough to preserve the quantum phase. quantamagazine.org/physicists-spo…

Researchers developed a model that describes the microscopic dynamics of a nucleus accelerating through the #superfluid medium of a #NeutronStar’s inner crust. The #OpenSource tool could be used to shed light on superfluidity in other #nuclear systems. 🔗 go.aps.org/4gfUNPg

I will be presenting two e-posters at the upcoming EAS annual meeting, one about shallow heating in magnetar crusts and the other about gapless superfluidity in accreting neutron stars
