While extreme rain events are on the rise, the total amount of monsoon rainfall over India is decreasing. That means longer dry periods interspersed with short spells of heavy downpour. Hence, the chances of floods and droughts co-occurring have increased.

These yellow and red spots—are regions where extreme rains causing floods have increased threefold since 1950s. The trends hold for northeast India - Bangladesh floods (2022), Maharashtra floods (2021), central Kerala floods (2020, 2019, 2018), and so on. nature.com/articles/s4146…
