Have you picked up your copy of So Once Was I yet?

The ‘faithful departed’, as James Joyce referred to the cemetery’s population, are reanimated in this book through vivid re-tellings of their stories.

Available online & in all good bookshops!

Soldiers, chaplains, prisoners, residents, Taoiseach, Prime Minsters and a Queen all appear in ‘Spike Island’

Oh, and Irish Confederates, Young Irelanders, Fenians, Republicans and every other incarnation of Irish opposition to overseas rule!

Some fascinating facts from Spike Island include the sheer scale of the 1804 fortress & 1847 prison

Both were products of an Empire unbound by financial restraint

Seeking to consolidate its grip on Ireland & ascendency

It took until 1938 to end a 160 year military occupation

The first casualties of the Easter Rising were the unfortunate occupants of a crashed car

Con Keating, Charlie Monaghan & Martin Sheehan (elsewhere Donal) all drowned when their car plummeted off a pier in bad visibility

They were on the way to meet the gun running ship the Aud

Spike Island was home to the largest prison in the world in the 1850s, during the Irish famine. In its worst year, 12% of prisoners died, with 1300 deceased inmates lying in mass graves.

This amazing Pathe footage shows the handover of Spike Island from Britain to Ireland, 11th July 1938

A concession of the Anglo-Irish trade war, it marked another sun setting on a part of the Empire

British troops had held the island since 1779

“In this year fierce, foreboding omens came over the land of the Northumbrians, and the wretched people shook; there were excessive whirlwinds, lightning, and fiery dragons were seen flying in the sky,”

793AD was WILD according to the Anglo-Saxon chronicle.
