1921 Captain Eileen McGrane had her courts-martial. McGrane was the first woman to be courts-martialled in the WoI. She was charged with High Treason following an Auxie raid on her flat, found arms & IRA intelligence documents.

1916 Sean Mac Diarmada, from Kiltyclogher, Leitrim was executed in Kilmainham Gaol for his role in the Easter Rising. Before his death he wrote;
“I feel happiness the like of which I have never experienced. I die that the Irish nation might live!”

1916 James Connolly was taken from the State Apartments in Dublin Castle, taken to Kilmainham Gaol, tied to a chair & executed. Before he was shot Connolly said to his wife Lillie,
“Hasn’t it been a full life Lillie, and isn’t this is a good end?”

1943 Nineteen men & boys aged between 13 and 34 were killed when a floating sea mine detonated on the shore of Ballymanus, Donegal. The locals had tried to remove it from the rocks as the local coast watcher sought help form the Ordnance Corps.

1886 Richard Mulcahy was born in Waterford. He fought with Thomas Ashe during the Easter Rising, Minister of Defence in the First Dáil, was IRA Chief of Staff during the War of Independence & became head of the National Army following Collins' death.

1916 Thomas Kent was executed in Cork following a shootout with the RIC that left Kent's brother Richard & 1 RIC dead. In January he told a court;

“As a Volunteer, I’m prepared to defend my country to the last drop of my blood against all comers”.

1781 The Hibernia Regiment of Spain, led by Arturo O'Neill, helped capture the British held town of Pensacola during the American Revolutionary War. The Hibernians were some of the first to make ground, place artillery & take the defences.

1915 The RMS Lusitania was torpedoed by U-20 (which initially took Casement to Ireland for the Easter Rising) 10 miles off the Irish coast, killing 1,198 people. She was also carrying millions of rounds of ammo & other war materiel.

1905 Fr Peter Paul Cooney, from Roscommon died. Fr Cooney was chaplain to the 35th Indiana '1st Irish Regiment' during the American Civil War. Cooney was the longest serving Catholic chaplain during the war from 1861-1865, leaving for Notre Dame.

1981 Bobby Sands died in Long Kesh prison after 66 days on hunger strike. He & the other hunger strikers protested for special status as political prisoners rather than criminals. Sands was an elected MP at the time of his death. He was 27 years old.
