Even if you don't ride transit much you should want bus lanes enforced because they help emergency vehicles get around traffic.

Now more than ever as we approach the U.S. Presidential Election, when you’re on this site, keep it clicked on “Following” rather than “For You.” The algorithm is NOT neutral.

A report assessed two North Carolina projects piloting low-speed autonomous shuttles, stood up by partners including the state Department of Transportation. It found the vehicles still have significant limitations. govtech.com/transportation…

Self-driving cars could be a disaster for climate change and road safety -- even if they work perfectly. The Jevons paradox, a classic 19th century theory, explains why. Me in The Verge 🧵 theverge.com/2024/9/2/24232…

People in different fields have different dates for when Elon Musk became ridiculous, depending on when he first showed up in their field and claimed to know all about it. For public transit planners like me it was 2017 as I recall.

Transit modes can be used in very different ways. It’s easy to say “city X has a metro” but that does that mean? Here’s an example from the Nordics— three metros with different purposes.

San Francisco voters will consider a tax on ridehailing companies (Uber, Waymo etc) to fund public transit. It's timely given the rise of driverless ridehailing which, if it becomes too cheap, could strangle the city in single-occupant traffic. sf.gov/information/pr…

There are two tensions in US transportation that IMO will break hard in one direction or the other. First is, driver violence is epidemic, is substantially widespread, and is socially and culturally accepted. Second is, victims of driver violence are getting organized.

Portland's superpower is its complete disinterest in what Seattle thinks of it, or how it compares to Seattle. The two cities are just built with different goals.

my favorite new york social code is when a lone person needs to get a stroller up the subway stairs. nearly instantly, a stranger picks up the other end of the stroller, helps carry it up, then departs as quickly as they appeared. no words are exchanged. eye contact is minimal.

Portland’s post-pandemic travel patterns (less focused on downtown) have weakened the case for new light rail lines, so for now TriMet is busy expanding bus service, and increasing rail frequency. (We’ll still need the downtown rail tunnel for a fast E-W link across the region.)

A major bank is moving from downtown Portland to an industrial park in the suburbs. Two years from now they’ll be yelling at the transit authority TriMet: “What happened to our public transit?” (Yes, employers really do this.)

Nationally recognized Culdesac Tempe is living up to its hype—the question is to what extent cities will get out of the way to allow this to happen elsewhere. Lessons from ‘car-free’ Culdesac: tinyurl.com/55ymj5ks

Local tv news is full of stories about how motorists are the only people who count as human. The blowback in the comments is heartening.

I love 𝚃𝚊𝚛𝚊𝚜 𝙶𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚌𝚘𝚎 🚇 but useful transit in cities is not microscopic. The important number is the ratio of passengers to employees, which requires large vehicles to meet large demand. Many cities have a cute thing like this for tourists or seniors but it's not how the city moves.
