Anna Fazackerley That comment alone has wiped out any faith I had left in the so-called Big Listen. Itโ€™s unforgivable to blame leaders and teachers instead of looking in the mirror. Shocking lack of humility.

Same with sch funding. Over the past decade cuts (which have impacted the whole syst) have disproportionately hurt schs in poorer areas. Itโ€™s noteworthy how this pattern filters into policies across sectors.

In Eng those promoting conservative sch/g practices, those enshrined for centuries (strict rules, set curricula, exams, punitive beh policies etc) constantly position themselves as (i) victims of attack by 'orthodoxy' (even though they ARE the orthodoxy) & (ii) revolutionaries.

Until we are able, as a society, to move away from 'judgement' + 'inspection' (as many nations have done) and embrace 'trust' + 'collaboration' we will continue to have school evaluation practices that cause massive harm. Alt approaches do exist- statesofmind.org/breaking-the-sโ€ฆ

Another day, another traumatised 15 yr old who's self-worth hits rock bottom, facing another yr & a half struggling to access learning, feeling constantly, in his words, 'stupid'. It's v hard, after 12 yrs listening to these stories. Shout out to all the fam's dealing with this.

โ€œIn both cases [Norway & Estonia] school evaluation is about support and collaboration, not surveillance and judgment.
More supportive approaches are not a pipe dream; they are business-as-usual in many places.โ€

โ€œThe impact on children is real. A report this month showed children in the western world are becoming increasingly unhappy and are โ€œreally strugglingโ€. Parents and families also keep raising the alarm about the same issue.โ€

'Many teachers live in constant fear of poor results and Ofsted inspections. This creates an internalised experience of hyper-surveillance'

โ€œWhich many parents latch on to as the keyโ€ฆโ€

No. No they donโ€™t.

Without exception, the parents Iโ€™ve spoken to in the last decade donโ€™t โ€˜ latch on toโ€™ OFSTED.

Stop using us as your excuse, whipping boy, fall guy.

One of the funniest parts of hitchhiking is that many who pick you up say:

'It must be so hard to hitchhike these days... does anyone even pick you up?'

This is hilarious when you hear it from a half-dozen people in a single day of hitchhiking, and they often say it while they
