As the sun sets over the Mauritania desert with a fiery red display, two camels silhouetted below seem to transport pyramids across the level expanse.

Malawi has one of world's lowest levels of electricity access. Only 14% of Malawians (5.6% in rural areas) are connected to grid. So, forests are cut, burned - 20% of forests lost in last 20 years. Biogas production is proposed as solution, burning farm waste to make electricity.

Immense but calm. The mighty Congo River flowing through Central African Republic as the sun sets (5:51pm today) mirrors two boys in a dugout canoe.

Mother adores her child. There's no such thing as a black panther species. Like the leopard cub in this pic some regular panthers and cheetahs are born with black fur due to melanism. They have no problems with acceptance or mating, and pass on the recessive genetic condition.

Good news, and how they did it. East African fishermen using dynamite were a serious problem. Blasts killed all marine life, including coral reefs. But first Tanzania followed by Kenya and Mozambique stopped it. How? Restriction on dynamite, with big fines for illegal possession.

Is the sand trap a patch of green grass? In a few months, Burkina Faso's only golf course turns 50 years old: the Ouagadougou Golf Club. Its fairways are pure dirt. No water for irrigation. But the game's the same. (A typical golf course uses 757 million litres of water a year.)

Congrats Zambia (and congrats to you and me who've made it to May of this tumultuous year 2024): May's birthstone is the emerald. Zambia is now the WORLD'S #1 producer of the rare, beautiful green gem, surpassing Chile, the old #1, this past year. 🇿🇲

Homesick. Mauritania's long Atlantic shoreline is one of the world's largest ship graveyards. This much-photographed beached ship appears to be looking wistfully to the sea as if longing to sail again.

The sun has set over South Africa, and a glider wings silently through the sky. Glider? They're called Sailplanes now, and SA is a growing world leader in their manufacturing. Improving electric engines for motor-gliders is today's goal.
