The only thing that I am not sure about is why it took so long to get to this. My guess is that until now it only happened in the dark corners of personalized political ads.

New development environment projects tend to start with the support for writing.

We also built an environment, but we started from supporting reading first. We actually built the code editor at the end.

And we ended up with completely new properties:

When it comes to system building, it is critical to have the ability to inspect at least the result, if not the path of reasoning.

On June 17th, I'm going to restart my research efforts. The first set of mapping will focus on the 'future of work'. A bit of background to what is involved - swardley.medium.com/simple-suggest… ... yes, AI, remote work, changing technology spaces are bound to be involved.

Google Books is full of AI-generated garbage. This is bad for a variety of reasons. One of them is that Google Books ultimately feeds into NGram Viewer, which is a tool academics use to do research on human culture and language

I am the first to point out that there are shortcomings in the funding model of academic research that are not conducive to long term fundamental research.

At the same time, I am very much the product of an academic formation. It can certainly be better but it does seem to work.

One way to regard computing is through input and output. It’s a utilitarian view that numbers can often summarize nicely.

Another way is to regard it as an encoding of knowledge. This one leads to insight. And to joy.

Time to build in public again.

I will be rebuilding the Codex standoff property text editor from scratch in TypeScript and open sourcing both the source code and data format.

Also, I will be sharing pictures of the project from my notebook.

Starting now.

Quantitative education is greatest bastion of cognitive pessimism.

IQ brain rot circulates the circular fallacy that “haven’t learned” = “cannot learn” which applied to literally anything other discipline rightfully appears silly.

Oh, when we rely on reading as the primary means to reason about a system, the code already appears incomprehensible. Reading code is an incidental way to reason about a system. The way the system looks is a job for the environment through which we look.
