A line I hear a lot is: “AI won’t take your job, but someone who uses AI will!”

I don’t think that any part of that is necessarily true. AI may take some jobs (& create others). Some tasks will be AI automated without a “person” using it. Many jobs will transform, not get taken

A profound understanding of technology is found in Historian Melvin Kranzberg's 6 Laws of Technology. Here they are in a 🧵

1st Law: “Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral,” many problems occur when benign technologies are used at scale. Think DDT (or Facebook)

Having spent years helping my kids with math homework, ChatGPT has made me a better tutor. When I can’t remember a method or need to explain something in a different way, it helps.

Parents can use it to work with kids: take a picture with the app, ask to explain the principles.

One side effect from AI is that the corpus of human knowledge from mid-2023 on will have to be treated fundamentally differently than prior to 2023.

A huge amount of what you learned or think you know about how to evaluate images or text is no longer valid. Not an exaggeration.

3 misconceptions about AI I tackle in my new blog:
1) “AI is not capable of being creative”
2) “AI is out of reach for people in developing countries”
3) “This is like previous technology waves” blogs.worldbank.org/investinpeople…

Want to make life a little better for you coworkers? Don’t send emails outside of work hours (or, if you do, communicate they are not urgent).

Receivers way over-estimate how urgent out-of-work messages are compared to the actual goals of the email senders, causing stress.
