The Verve The Verve - A Northern Soul (1995) Epic & brooding 2nd album that is utterly mesmerising & intense. Ashcroft delivers his message like a jacked up shaman channelling an inner spirit. Strong contender. Best track - On Your Own

Depeche Mode Violator (1990) The quintessential synth pop album with more than one eye on the dance floor. Depeche Mode, without compromise, appeal to rock, dance and goth followers alike. Glacial, spacey production brings every element into sharp relief. A triumph.

Beth Orton Trailer Park (1996) Beth Orton's distant and wistful voice effortlessly ties together the worlds of folk and electronica. Laid back and mellow. You can see why she was in so much demand as a guest singer in the 90's.

Massive Attack Massive Attack - Blue Lines (1991) Genre defining, definitively British hip/trip hop with great contributions from Horace Andy and Shara Nelson including my favourite song of all time - Unfinished Sympathy.

The SUNDAYS Reading, Writing And Arithmetic (1990) The pure English voice of Harriet Wheeler takes centre stage accompanied by layered, ringing guitars. Their influences are clear, but they use them as a springboard to produce a debut of spacious, clear pop tuneage

Morrissey Morrissey - Vauxhall And I (1994) A more overtly personal and comfortable Morrissey on show here. The Smiths era cover stars move onto the solo song Spring Heeled Jim. The cruel black humour as cutting as ever. Possibly peak solo Morrissey?

Radiohead The Bends (1995) Mid-90's, travelling in France with a French colleague taking it in turns to play CDs. I put on The Bends - 'Reeshar, zis eez sheet'.

He's wrong, it's magnificent. Best track - High And Dry

The Cure Wish (1992) Massively underrated follow-up to Disintegration. The uptempo singles mask the atmospheric despair that permeaties the rest of the album. Great multilayered guitars, as always. No-one does that better. The last great Cure record?

Sigur RΓ³s Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun (1999) Embryonic and seminal album from Iceland's answer to Mogwai. This must have been recorded in the midst of an endless Icelandic winter. You can almost see the icy breath in every line. A glacier in musical form. Excellent!

DeathΔ°nVegas Death In Vegas - The Contino Sessions (1999) Starting with a track called Dirge is a pretty brave choice, but we're soon flying with midtempo trip-rock and a plethora of guest vocalists, including Iggy Pop on Best track - Aisha

Rage Against The Machine β˜… Rage Against The Machine (1992) A muscular clash of metal and rap that has never been surpassed. The entire record is doused in combustible conviction. Nailed on to be in my top 5 for sure. Excellent. Best track - Killing In The Name

Underworld Underworld - Beaucoup Fish (1999) At a hefty 74 mins long this takes some commitment but there are many highlights along the way. It works best when the hypnotic Techno beat is melded with sweeping strings. Best track - Cups

Rage Against The Machine β˜… Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire (1996) A sense crushing musical assault. Zack is back and at his full 'shouting at the pigeons in the park' best. Morello's guitar playing is innovative and imaginative. Best track - Bulls On Parade

david sylvian Nine Horses - Snow Borne Sorrow (2005) First listen - Enthralling and submersive as with the best David Sylvian work. Well chosen collaborations, in particular Stina Nordenstam on vocals. Looking forward to regular revisits.

David Bowie Official - Waiting In The Sky (2024) Proof that if Bowie hadn't gone away and written Starman, Suffragette and Rock And Roll Suicide, then Ziggy Stardust would have been a much worse album. Nothing new here music wise. For completists only.

BeBopDeluxe Futurama (Stephen Tayler Remix) (1975) Subtle remix of this art rock classic. Only 'Soundtrack' seems noticeably altered, although the whole album seems less trebly. A classic for sure but flipping pricy.

theBreeders Last Splash (1993) Magnificent! What a great creative outlet for Kim Deal to show off her songwriting chops. Great singles propel this indie classic into the AltRock Greats pantheon. Best track - Cannonball A-WOO-HA

blur Blur (1997) is the sound of a maturing band exploring new sonic territories and not resting on their Br*tp*p laurels. There is so much going on here both in terms of arrangements but also song structure. Song 2 is an extraordinary single.
