The xz fiasco has shown how a dependence on unpaid volunteers can cause major problems. Trillion dollar corporations expect free and urgent support from volunteers.

Microsoft MicrosoftTeams posted on a bug tracker full of volunteers that their issue is 'high priority'

Yep, that's worked out well for Portland. Wait, let's check some avg weekday numbers to confirm that:
Portland MAX only - 74,800 rides
Vancouver SkyTrain only - 446,400 rides

Canadas transparency problem. There just isn’t a culture of telling people what’s going on. Transit agencies act like they are guarding the nuclear codes.

Progressives really want you to believe elevated rail is ugly and not 'human scale' or 'interacting with the streetscape' while pushing for trams that look like this

A thread worth reading. Diversity makes systems resilient, whether technical (vital computers on large aircraft) or human (groupthink and assimilation engineering culture). All the problems Reece enumerates can be solved - but first we need to decide we want to solve them.

We must reject this ridiculous false dichotomy: high speed, high frequency, and high reliability are NOT mutually exclusive. Spend time near the LGV Sud-Est or the WCML and watch how many high(er) speed trains they move. Nobody would prefer an RER to Lyon regardless of frequency!

The TTC website is more service alert than actual website. If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. Why are escalator closures and late night construction sharing space with a partial closure of Toronto's second-busiest subway line?

Huge day for this amazing project. First test trains over the viaduct. A full, 12 car set, powered by an MP40 & MP54.

It's funny to have watched this every day for the last three years & finally see the end result of all that labour. Congratulations to the whole project team!

Great thread from Uday on the impetus behind building Mac Yard in Vaughan.

(This is also how the Milton and Brampton Subdivisions lost their names. The remaining chunks became the Guelph and Weston Subs, with the new Halton Sub connecting Burlington directly to Mac Yard.)

Toronto's most optimistic urbanist has had enough of the city. Hard to blame him when you read the reasons why.

A small convoy of streetcars are reversing eastward in the westbound lanes of King St due to the flooding incident at St. Andrew. Unfortunately, the tracks on York St are closed due to construction, so they'll have to reverse all the way to Church St.

as someone who got a traditional 'look left, look right; one of you will drop out' engineering education i sure wish this was true. college is incredibly high-stakes today and it has reduced the quality of education and has wreaked havoc with students' mental health

VIA Rail's operations are falling apart. The weather isn't in their control, but the communications strategy and disaster recovery plan are.

The front-line staff, stressed beyond belief, deserve praise. This is a structural failure, and I hope VIA does a debrief to find out why.

Every time I come to the West Midlands, there's something new going on: tram extensions to Wolverhampton city centre and Edgbaston, protected cycle lanes in Selly Oak, a new bike share service across W Mids... wow! Things are slowly improving, little by little.

I'm so happy to see this becoming a regular sight. VIA finally has some rolling stock manufactured in my lifetime.

This seems amazing. Belgium now requires, BY LAW:

1) public indoor spaces must display CO2 level
2) risk analysis and action plan
3) targets: level A (CO2 < 900 ppm and clean air provided at 40 m3/h/person) and level B (CO2 < 1200 ppm and 25 m3/h/person)
