LA is just like any other city, except sometimes the guy at the cafe who looks like Brad Pitt actually is Brad Pitt

The wild west phase of foundation models is almost over. Soon training sets will all be licensed content ( eg Reddit, FT, Springer) or verifiably open access open use. As with music streaming, next battle will be to see if creators can extract meaningful payment from publishers

This suit against Meta by Ethan Zuckerman w counsel from Knight First Amendment Institute has everything.
Section 230 interpretive fights galore, all on behalf of middleware providers, and with implications for researchers. And copyright and DMCA 1201 claims waiting in the wings!

I knew I wanted to become a law professor, but I had no idea what that would require and did not prep myself well at all during law school. I made it work after though!

A problem with this Cali AI bill I haven't seen mentioned: like the AI EO/Commerce KYC proposed regs, the KYC provisions of SB 1047 appear to violate the federal Stored Communications Act. Gov't needs subpoena or court order for such info from a remote computing provider.

'by publicly identifying & discussing unlicensed samples, hip-hop fans on sites like whosampled & youtube may be unwittingly putting their favorite producers at risk...for some, publicly identifying a sample used in a song is tantamount to 'snitching.”'

This is quite interesting! But perhaps Warhol provides a solution? If you sample, but put the derivative work you create into the public domain, can the “sample trolls” sue you for infringement? You aren’t competing…🤔papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

This Financial Times article with former TikTok employees talking about ByteDance’s influence on daily operations is about what I’d expect absent a very formal, very disruptive and inconvenient firewall.

Here’s how that plays out for Trust and Safety:

Wondering what's really in CT SB 2 that passed Senate last night? See my overview and two-pager below.

IMO if enacted, CT SB 2 would stand as the 1st piece of US legislation governing the private-sector development and deployment of AI with comparable scale to the EU AI Act.

Hey, law students, as you're preparing for final exams, remember that profs are looking for ANALYSIS more than anything. WHY do the facts given matter in light of the law you've studied? Don't know how to do that? Check out these two very short videos from Eric E. Johnson. /1
