"...most universities have been excluded from JobKeeper. So far more than 17,000 jobs have been lost in the sector, with more to come. Can you imagine this government being so nonchalant about losing the equivalent number of jobs in any other industry?"

Current @NHMRC funding can't support excellence. In 2021 33% of NHMRC Ideas grants rated outstanding by international standards were unfunded. THe sector is now in crisis. We call on Australian Government to immediately double the @NHMRC budget to support careers + ensure a healthy future

New review out from our lab looking at the state of vaccine development for flaviviruses. The field still faces challenges developing these vaccines, and so is it time to look at different approaches? Read about it below. mdpi.com/2076-393X/12/8… Vaccines MDPI

Here, we reanalyse support for claims published in mBio on #SARSCoV2 "recombination" with bacteria. We find no evidence that mutations in SARS-CoV-2 VOC originate from homologous fragments in gut microbiota. Thanks to JVirology Editors for publishing. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/jv…

New from the RNA Virology lab: We characterized 2021-2022 vaccine & hybrid immunity cohorts for #SARSCoV2 in QLD AUS and generated an ΔORF3-8 attenuated strain. We validated this virus in neutralization assays with sera panel. We hope for future BSL2 use. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Great to see Dr Daniel Rawle back at UQ, now leading the Emerging Viral Diseases Lab. His team is dissecting viral replication and immunopathology to develop antivirals, vaccines, and anti-inflammatories. Exciting work in motion at QIMR Berghofer 🦠🧬 #virology
