When you have a difficult, disrespectful, and defiant student, my biggest tip for you… is to have lots of conversations with them when they are not in trouble. These conversations are where you build rapport… and that rapport makes future confrontations less likely.

Please remember that all those interactions you have with your students outside of the lesson really matter. The smiles… the eye contact… the jokes, the fist bumps… and the silliness…they’re all important. They remind kids that they matter. Those moments can mean the world.

You don’t shape school culture in your office. You shape it in the halls, in the classrooms, in the lunchroom… engaging with those around you.
