A handful of elite schools — Brown, Wesleyan, Johns Hopkins — seem to have handled the Palestine protests gracefully.

Their successful approach: don't send cops after students, talk seriously with the protestors, and enforce *preexisting* codes about speech and harassment.

Students are calling out President Shafik and the NYPD and chanting, “Columbia your hands are red, 40,000 people dead!”

I've covered campus activism since the late 90s. Nothing that's happening on campuses now -- sit ins, building takeovers, encampments -- is at all outside the standard vernacular of student protest.
