You are mistaken. Both ‘pati’ (पति) and ‘patnī’ (पत्नी) mean “owner”, “possessor”, “master/mistress” or “ruler”. The word ‘patnī’ (पत्नी) is the feminine form of ‘pati’ (पति), and not the opposite. Hence, the word ‘patnī’ (पत्नी) does not mean “a slave”. The word ‘pati’ (पति)
