I just don’t know who the NIO think they are kidding? Announcing an expert panel with privileged access to classified files as they close down inquests, many of which barely functioned due to file closures and redactions, all exist in the same universe.

You cannot divorce one from the other. The government did a great job of linking both by launching the history project last week just before the Legacy Act became operational, promising files to historians that it was hell bent on denying to victims’ families.

Some of the response to my and Cormac Moore’s linking of LA to official history suggested there was no link at all with the government’s plans. Yet here is the NIO saying that it does. Might not be part of the LA specifically but it is part of legacy process.

My article in today’s The Irish News on why no historian should have anything to do with the British government’s “independent public history” project, a charade that is intrinsically linked to the reviled British Legacy Act. irishnews.com/opinion/no-his…

Given that this is a British government initiative, who has been showing its true colours ad nauseam of late on its approach to truth and justice, this cannot be independent. No historian should have anything to do with it.

Today's The Irish News leads with plans to finally shut down the botched RHI scheme. Also, the prohibition on police accessing secret recordings about a former IRA member’s activities during the Troubles is to be rescinded and Marian Keyes on taking it one day at a time
