The tiny predator Lacrymaria olor owes its shape-shifting ability to an “origami-like” cellular architecture, a new Science study finds. The results offer a glimpse into geometrical control of behavior in single cells. Learn more in this week's issue: scim.ag/7eu

76 years ago #Today, Claude Shannon published the article 'A Mathematical Theory of Communication', cited over 100,000 times, which is rare for a scientific article and gave rise to the field of information theory.

Stein's unbiased risk estimate (SURE) is an almost magical formula that enables the computation of the mean squared error of a denoiser (used, for example, in denoising score matching) using only the noisy observation y, without requiring the clean data x. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stein%27s…

How do dynamic forces influence symmetry-breaking in embryonic development? Hi, I’m Rajendra Singh Negi🇮🇳 🇩🇪 🇺🇸, and in this thread, I’d like to introduce some aspects of the interdisciplinary research on tissue dynamics.

The Fast Marching algorithms perform a front propagation on the surface. It solves in a single pass the Eikonal equation and thus computes the geodesic distance to the starting points. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geodesic math.berkeley.edu/~sethian/

One cool thing about insect wing evolution is that the oldest winged insects are Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) and Dragonflies (Odonata), both of which have aquatic larval stages. Wings may have evolved from gills, meaning insects had to learn to swim before they could fly!
