BEFORE AND AFTER (TV-79) Overweight wife & mother (at 139lbs!) loses her husband & starts an exercise regimen; suddenly skinny, she learns thinner isn't everything. Frivolous piece plays like Patty Duke's Greatest Hits, w/an exercise montage straight out of 'Dolls'. Pretty dull.

Jon Sieruga Intriguing premise that is mutely acted by a cast that leave you aching for fireworks. Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson both look like they've never parented a child, in real life or on film. Furlong, not volatile enough. The poster had more actual dynamics.

BEFORE AND AFTER (96) Teen from New England town stands accused of killing his girlfriend. The family dynamics strangely off-kilter in a melodrama that depends on a realistic familial unit. Schroeder can't get a bracing rhythm cooking; Neeson particularly weak as boy's father.

TAKE A GIANT STEP (59) Black 17yrold in mostly-white small town wrestles w/family whom he sees as kowtowing to the whites. Variation of 'Rebel W/out a Cause' via play has good lead in Nash, but using race as the central issue doesn't exactly make film more relevant or an anomaly.

THE MIRACLE WORKER (TV-79) TV redo of 62 play-adapt w/Duke graduating from Helen Keller to teacher Anne Sullivan. Color vers too straightforward--there's nothing here for us to discover for ourselves. Gilbert fine, but Patty takes a while adjusting to this new role. Not terrible.
