Charles Evans Hughes: person of strict, high values, including religious. They informed his judging. But he, a law man, did not invoke or impose them. And when called in 1916 to carry a political flag (Republican party presidential nominee), he resigned from the Supreme Court.

NEW LAW DORK: Washington Post bombshell: Washington Post buried Alito flag story for three years. This raises many questions, several relating to the fact that the Post, at least passively, made the decision not to reveal this news many times since 2021. lawdork.com/p/washington-p…

I hope everyone understands that this amounts to “Russia, if you’re listening [which they are], please continue to hold this innocent person prisoner for another six months as a political favor to me”

Great reporting. Dismaying news. Justice Alito, besmirching the Supreme Court, should resign. This country is filled with excellent, including ethical and impartial in fact and in appearance, alternatives who would bring credit to the Court.

This makes the nice point that “rule of law” commitments are human decisions and, often, hard gut checks.

Clever for his counsel to call Trump to “testify” only in the courthouse hallway (no cross-examination), and to give him a script/argument to read. Problem: he failed to mention all of the courtroom evidence of his guilt.

A friend was naturalized yesterday. At the oath ceremony, newly-minted US citizens received this poignant letter from President Biden.
I welled up reading it and am sharing it here.

If the U.S. flag was flown upside down outside the Alito home for at least “several days” in January 2021, maybe someone lowered it each evening, folded and stored it inside, and then raised it again, upside down, the next morning, for at least 3 days—lots of household activity.

Chief Justice Roberts could do what Taft, or Hughes, or Stone, or Vinson, or Warren, or Burger, or Rehnquist, would do: not nothing, and probably something quite direct and final.
