Not exactly! This is a test that’s been in public health labs for 20 years and has worked perfectly well. This is a problem with one component within one lot. A manufacturing issue that will be quickly resolved.

I was grateful to be part of this conversation with Jennifer Nuzzo, DrPH (@pandemiccenter) on Friday. Open dialogue about what is known and not known - and where we need to do more - is essential for emerging public health threats.

You may have seen reports yesterday of an issue with H5N1 tests sent to labs. This does NOT mean there’s a problem with testing. It was a bad batch made by a manufacturer. CDC caught and recalled it. This is actually a good sign RE: CDC’s oversight and responsiveness.

I joined twitter in the early days of the H1N1 influenza pandemic to keep track of news and developments. Hard to believe that was 15 years ago today.

There are many wonderful things about living in RI. But it’s insistence on over-roasting coffee is not one. Fortunately, a fresh shipment from Small Planes Coffee arrived!

FDA announces no infectious was found in PCR positive milk.

They used the “gold standard” egg inoculation tests that many have been waiting for.

Together with NIAID grantee studies and past publications, it’s pretty conclusive the milk is safe. fda.gov/food/alerts-ad…

1/ Are you struggling to keep track of all the developments in the US?

Together w/ Brennan Klein & Moritz Kraemer, we started an open-access timeline of key events related to the outbreak.

As you can see, the situation is rapidly progressing, so we will keep updating.

This innovative initiative is led by Community Noise Lab’s Dr. Erica Walker who is part of our Brown Epidemiology faculty. She is a ⭐️. I love her community-centered approach to public health research.

👀US-based vet said that there is underreporting of H5N1 infections in farm workers

'every dairy that I've worked with has – with the exception of one – had sick human beings at the same time they had sick cows'

A vet pleads with the US agriculture regarding H5N1:

“Address it head-on...Don’t hide.”

Agriculture 'needs a comprehensive, cohesive plan to address the virus in dairy – and to also look at how to protect the beef, pork and poultry industries.'

H5N1 is indeed reminiscent of early COVID... AND early mpox, early Zika...

The US needs to get better at issue spotting, thinking ahead and acting in advance to prevent the worse outcomes from happening...in stead of waiting until its obvious that more should have been done.

Jennifer Nuzzo, DrPH This is what happens when the main agency in charge is USDA, which is protecting the dairy and meat industries. The CDC should have overall authority. There is going to be jockeying for power in the Executive Branch and politics will interfere with public health.

This whole thread is informative but I want to highlight the development described in this tweet as being particularly encouraging. Financial incentives have been said to help for surveillance in chickens.
