Two weeks ago, I heard back officially from NSF that my CAREER proposal was award.
Today, I heard back from the Vice Chancellor's office that I've been granted tenure! 🎉
I guess now I can finally say that I have a career and I go tenure! (1/n)

What happens when you deploy a simulated social media environment and ask users to interact w/AI interventions?

CSAIL researchers investigate how genAI can mitigate “alternative facts”

Excited to share our work on the cultural adaptability of LLMs!
📣We release NormAd, a dataset to measure LLM adaptability to varying degrees of social and cultural norms from 75 different countries!

Are LLMs biased toward themselves?

Frontier LLMs give higher scores to their own outputs in self-eval. We find evidence that this bias is caused by LLM's ability to recognize their own outputs

This could interfere with safety techniques like reward modeling & constitutional AI

I think about this a lot. As an academic, as a poet, writing is really an act of discovery. Not everyone feels this way, but for a lot of people writing is a way of thinking.

This should really make us pause and think about how we want computers to get involved with our writing:

Will be giving a talk at this workshop - I think it will be fun!

Evaluation is an incredibly important topic when it comes to social accountability - and with LLMs there's a lot of system properties that make traditional approaches difficult! Looking to shed some light on this.

I'm delighted to share a position paper I'm presenting this Thursday at the Big Picture Workshop at EMNLP: a 9-page summary of my PhD thesis, laying out a framework for a *science* of NLP.

If you want to know what my PhD taught me, read the paper (and come by the workshop)!
