Probably because authors don't get paid enough to write, a book's success is usually determined before it's even released, publishers don't want to keep supporting an author who hasn't sold well, B&N, Amazon, authors lose steam and hope, have to focus on marketing/publicity etc.

Publishing continues the tradition of informing authors about big changes at our imprints via our friends texting us 'did you see the news on twitter?!'
