China has called on the Houthis to end their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea (from which Chinese vessels are spared) splash247.com/beijing-calls-….

One could also expect China to send a naval force to the Red Sea to protect shipping & strike Houthis targets. But that won't happen.

Yes, it's a good thing from a maritime-security perspective that Sweden and Finland are now members of NATO.

But their navies are small.

The fact that Russia has removed the buoys demarking its maritime border with Estonia matters far beyond Estonia.

Challenging/violating maritime borders is as serious as doing it to land borders.

Russia has simply removed the buoys that demark its maritime border with Estonia.

That's just the latest case of Russia and China challenging/violating other countries' maritime borders.

A dangerous trend.

The challenge of being a law-abiding coastal state: even though shadow vessels violate international maritime rules, you can't ban them because doing so would violate international maritime rules.

Beware of Russia (and China) challenging maritime borders - not just land borders.

That's what's happening in Estonia. Russia has simply removed buoys that demark Estonia's maritime border with Russia.

Thank you Financial Times for the opportunity to write about this growing problem.

An excellent summary. The brilliance of the Norwegian model is that it's so selective that being chosen for military service is the best possible entry on young people's CVs - the equivalent of being admitted to Oxbridge.

What will future US foreign and security policy look like with our budding officials increasing opting out of living in other countries?

During the Cold War, young Americans wanting to go into government service pursued Area Studies & even lived behind the Iron Curtain.

Russia's shadow vessels violate international maritime rules.

That's a dilemma - because affected Western countries would need to violate international maritime rules to make a major dent in this trade.

The Defender's Dilemma all over.

Young Americans wanting to go into foreign and security policy are focused on getting security clearances.

So focused that they forgo living abroad or even making friends abroad.

What does that mean for the future of US foreign and security policy?

Thank you. What does the fact that the new cadre of officials has limited experience in/with other countries mean for the future of US foreign and security policy?

No literature can ever replace personally knowing a country/culture.

US college students wanting to go into foreign & security increasingly forgo any foreign links - because they're focused on getting a security clearance.
