The biggest hummingbird in the world is a new species.

Now out in PNASNews and 8 years in the making, here's how we figured it out with mini tracking devices, genomics, and a century and a half of museum specimens.πŸ‘‡

The amount of terrible published scientific articles is about to just explode. It’s a trend that we’ve been seeing for years, poor underlying data and small sample sizes (and just bad experimental design) all covered up by fancy analysis and some p-hacking till something is sig.

Just got copied on a decision letter for a paper I reviewed. The only problem is I had no memory of ever reviewing it.

Turns out I did… in 2020.

I am struggling to comprehend the circumstances in which an editor takes 4 years to make a decision on a paper lmao

Our lab is moving to the EEB department at the University of Arizona University of Arizona EEB this fall. We are excited about the move but also sad to say goodbye to so many great colleagues and friends here at LSU! We for sure will remember and appreciate this incredible journey here.

Letter to a young ecologist
It may seem counterintuitive that in an accelerating world you should try slowing down, but the deep work that is needed to advance ecology requires time for reflection with a mind that is clear, open, and eager

Great read
β€œIt may seem counterintuitive that to get ahead in an accelerating world, you should try slowing down. But your life and work will be richer if you give yourself the time to read deeply, write clearly, and reason quantitatively, preferably after taking that long walk.”

Some eye-candy to share. This is a terrestrial scan of a grown in an old-growth forest in Missouri. The detail we can capture with lidar is helping us study details about the canopy of southern pines

I have a vague memory of listening to a podcast, or maybe it was an internet blog/article, that looked at the development of the academic publishing model as it is today. There was some dude at the center of it who saw that prestige could sell.

Ringing a bell for anyone?

Here is a review on how frequent disturbances (downturns) have enhanced the resilience of human societies by Phil Riris nature.com/articles/s4158… nature

The analogy between ecological & human systems is increasingly apparent besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

I am thrilled to announce that I will be starting as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Fire Ecology at UBC Okanagan in January 2026. I’m grateful for the opportunity and so excited to expand my research program on the ecology and management of fire-adapted ecosystems!

When it comes to problems with academic publishing we are in fact the baddies. So many scholars really think pre-pub peer review works as quality control & published stuff is trustworthy. There is no easy fix to the quality problem, but ending publication as target is a beginning

I’m ecstatic to share that I’ve starten as Director of Science at The Nature Conservancy in Washington (The Nature Conservancy in Washington)!

I've long admired TNC & it's an honor to help bring science to the organization's conservation vision. There's no more special place than WA to do this work!

I agree with every word Brian McGill writes. Academic publishing is a mess, we are publishing too much, and letting for-profit publishers drive us into the ground. And we’re all complicit in this!
