I wish I heard this George Church (george church) podcast episode when I was a grad student!
1. You can change the world, as long as you don't care who gets credit.
2. The idea is not to never fail, it is to fail a million times a day.
3. Embrace the outlier!

We added new panelists since I last posted about this. I am looking forward to moderating a panel at SynBioBeta on how unique funding models can support research that falls outside the academic and for-profit realms.

I'll be talking to seemay chou from ArcadiaScience,…

Young scientists regularly ask me for career advice. Academia or industry? Big company or startup? US or Europe?  Good scientists in AI disciplines are fortunate to have many choices. But choosing can be stressful. I always give the same advice. 1/10

Always handy to have a negative strip of Western blot that you can use four times in the same figure!

One of the corresponding authors is a Nobel Prize winner Stanford University, the other one works Scripps Research.

I really wonder about standalone software firms

Some areas like LIMS etc seem to do quite well

Some areas like selling analysis seem to really struggle

I feel like many life scientists don’t budget for software so many analyses software have to be bundled in with reagents

This 👇 but the conundrum with offering software solutions is that the vendors need to know the scientific use case *really* well, ideally as practitioners in their past life. But there is not a lot of overlap between being a full stack developer and scientist.

5 years ago I decided that I wanted to build expertise in life sciences software. The hard part has been saying no to opportunities. Especially high impact roles at companies where the products are instruments or reagents. The upside is that when people want to learn about…

An absolutely fantastic way to increase this is to start a blog. Almost all the cool fun stuff in my professional life for me has come from doing stuff then blogging about it.

In academia, no one prepares you for starting a company.

I recently had a private talk with UC Berkeley students. Honest and direct about starting a company in Techbio. Including the stuff no one says out loud.

Full talk is now live: nfx.com/post/what-i-wi…
