Important thread by James Heilman, MD 🇺🇦.
Spinning this another way, the EM crisis in not just a function of poor/no planning wrt beds, services & workforce, its a function of stigma & cruel policies re: substance use, mental health and poverty.

This is a good exercise that I try to do regularly.

I hope Queen's Health Sciences is creating financial supports as well. As someone not attending grad, waiting for payday for my CPSA licensing for residency and not going to accept my Canadian Medical Hall Fame award because of financial reasons. Getting in the door doesn't mean access.

I applaud Queen's Health Sciences for implementing a lottery & reducing influence of file review on admissions. MCAT & GPA are still not great correlates of capacity for compassion or ability to make evidence-based decisions & still subject to systemic bias...but baby steps 🙂👣

Medical school admissions reform is a topic I’ve drummed on about for a decade. Pleased to see Queen's University take an innovative approach to addressing the significant systemic barriers that can keep people with the potential to be great doctors out of medicine.

Conscripting medical students to become family doctors is not the answer. Why don’t we make it that the conditions support medical students to want to become family doctors. The first step will be to pay family doctors what they deserve. Not $40 -40% overhead per patient.

Guideline authors (e.g. CTFPHC | GECSSP) need to remember that discouraging screening DISCOURAGES SCREENING.
In a system rife w/ inequities, we need to remember that gatekeeping screening will differentially harm Black & Indigenous women. Dr. Doreen Ezeife MD, MSc, FRCPC
