Your state DOT going through rounds and rounds of community input meetings and planning processes before ultimately deciding to go ahead and build more highway lane miles like they've been doing for the last century:

I think contemporary buildings generally serve as complimentary pieces next to older historic buildings like churches, but it's especially cool when you get a second view of the aged structure in the glass facade of the newer edifice.

May not seem like much, but presence of at least a bit of physical infrastructure to keep pedestrians safe when sidewalks are temporarily closed makes strolling around the city much less stressful.

Unfortunately Philadelphia too often fails to even enforce rules on the books.

You would think the fact that nearly all the population growth in the Philadelphia region having been captured by the suburbs for decades would be an issue city officials would be focused on fixing, but frankly many of them are indifferent to stagnation, or implicitly support it

Daniel Trubman, Rootless Cosmopolitan That block's street is 20 ft. wide, including sidewalks.

Sadly the city code requires new one-way streets to be at least 44 ft. with 20ft. for cars alone.

Maybe someday we'll allow building nice places again!

Narrow streets in our cities are cool as hell, as we shouldn't allow fire departments to forbid construction of new ones just because they don't want to buy fire trucks appropriately sized for working in urban environments.

If we're going to spend billions modernizing our trolley system in Philly, it doesn't make much sense to allow the local government to turn around and mandate parking for residential buildings so close to trolley stations.

Our state govt must legalize density near transit in PA.

I bring a sort of 'we should submit a couple of Right To Know requests' vibe to the transit advocacy world that outside counsel donโ€™t really mind getting paid to respond to

Don't forget Philadelphia was still the third largest city in USA in 1926!

It's easy to assume Philadelphia lost relevance soon about the Revolutionary War, but it wasn't until the late 19th and early 20th century that it reached its peak of international prominence.

Not sure I agree with Jonathan O'Brien of YIMBY Melbourne that housing quotas will be sufficient to induce local governments to accept more housing

Nothing will work quite like directly legalizing by-right housing, especially near train stations like this example

The BRT Express route on the MLK Corridor (49) has 15 and 30 minute headways during the week, and hourly service on the weekends (until 7 pm).

Why are we pretending BRT (as *actually* implemented in American metros) is a form of rapid transit?

If for no other reason than programs for poor people inevitably became poor programs I wish fewer folks framed transit as primarily a transportation of last resort.

It's crucial to keep prioritization on ridership when we're planning new transit infrastructure, because that'll encourage sticking to good corridors, instead of allowing other concerns to dictate routes with less potential.

Iโ€™m constantly told how legacy metros in NA (NYC, Toronto, etc.) canโ€™t be automated because theyโ€™re โ€œtoo old.โ€

Paris M4:
- Opened in 1908, over a CENTURY old
- Automated without disrupting ops
- Now runs world-class service: reliable 2 minute headways, PSDs, and high capacity
