Incredible solar activity captured by John Chumack on August 4: check out these amazing sunspot groups and active regions that demonstrate how ideally active our star is right now! Just amazing. Nice job, John!

Much of the galaxy is filled with dimly lit molecular clouds, and Sharpless 2–36 in Serpens is an excellent example. Chris Schur’s portrait captures this wispy nebula that is practically at the limit of astroimagers’ capabilities.

On the morning of August 26, Tony Hallas captured this impressive solar flare leaping off the Sun’s limb. Really cool shot!

David Eicher Astronomy Magazine That is indeed how it looked through an H-alpha telescope, and how I captured it that evening. Though SDO video of the same time period seemed to show it attached.

David Eicher Astronomy Magazine Tony still going strong after all these years. I remember drooling over his (and Daphne's) photos in the days of all night hand-guiding and hypered tech-pan film.

Chris Schur recently made a high-resolution image of the Rho Ophiuchi region, including the nebula surrounding Antares at bottom up to Rho Ophiuchi at the top. This is truly a magical region of the sky.

X marks the spot: On August 11 Al Papsun caught the so-called lunar X, a light and shadow effect on the lunar craters Blanchinus, La Caille and Purbach. Enjoy!

On August 25 Chris Schur recorded Comet 13P/Olbers at 8th magnitude as it approached the Blackeye Galaxy, M64, in Coma Berenices. A close encounter of the cometary kind!

This groundbreaking image by Bob Fera and Steve Mandel depicts the “shores of the lagoon,” a streamer of bluish nebulosity adjacent to the bright part of the familiar Lagoon Nebula in Sagittarius. A new frontier in a familiar place!

The wave of smart imaging telescopes is transforming basic asroimaging. This is the Lagoon Nebula shot recently by John Chumack with a Seestar 50s Smart Scope. Enjoy!

This is one of the most amazing shots I’ve ever seen of the Andromeda Galaxy — Tony Hallas has captured the galaxy’s faint extensions and outer halo of H-alpha emission. Just a stunning image of the object that was the key to unlocking the nature of galaxies!

Check out Adrian Bradley’s wonderful shot of a distant freighter on Lake Huron with the glories of the Winter Milky Way, accompanied by Jupiter, rising. Terrific!

Here’s a nice shot of Hadley Rille on the Moon, site of the Apollo 15 landing, where Jim Irwin and Dave Scott conducted their explorations. Congrats to Jamie Cooper for this wonderful photograph.

This extraordinary image by Chris Schur shows one of the sky’s premier dark nebulae, the handle and part of the bowl of the Pipe Nebula in Ophiuchus, which consists of B59, B65, B66, B67, B72, B77, and B78.

Adrian Bradley has captured a really nice deep shot of the constellation Cassiopeia, which contains numerous interesting deep-sky objects. This is a nice shot to compare with a star atlas and check out targets to observe!

One of the most spectacular recent images I’ve seen is this shot by our pal Adam Block. An amazing look into the workings of the Rosette Nebula, one of the greatest star-forming regions of the winter sky. Enjoy!

Here’s a really cool image by Douglas J. Struble showing the deep outer gas envelope of the Dumbbell Nebula, one of our favorite planetaries. Someday our solar system will look something like this. Enjoy!
