Last Glacial Maximum pattern effects reduce climate sensitivity estimates

Combining the LGM with other lines of evidence, the best estimate becomes 2.9°C, 66% range 2.4° to 3.5°C (2.1° to 4.1°C, 5 to 95%), substantially narrowing uncertainty

I'm excited to share a new paper in Science Advances led by UW's Vince Cooper showing that the last ice age provides much stronger constraints on Earth's climate sensitivity and future warming when ice-sheet driven temperature patterns are accounted for. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

The seagrass mapping project, funded by SouthamptonGeospatial & Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and led by Hachem Kassem from our School
uses autonomous surface and underwater vessels (ASV/AUV), diver surveys and machine learning to help protect seagrass in the Studland Bay Marine Conservation Zone.

Are you interested in paleoclimate and data-driven geoscience? We are a dynamic and diverse team in search of bright, creative scientists who think broadly about the Earth system, at both postdoctoral (spanning junior to senior) and PhD levels. (1/2)

New research published in Nature today finds that we are on track for climate damages worth $38 trillion per year by 2050. This is a staggering figure. The damages are projected to be worth 6x more than the mitigation costs of limiting global warming to 2C.

The world is making some real progress on climate change.

Not enough. But we have some momentum building, and many avenues to accelerate.

Unbleached reefs this year are coloured blue.

This is the most widespread and most severe mass bleaching and mortality event ever recorded on the Great Barrier Reef.

New paper🚨

“Global CO2 emissions for 2023 increased by only 0.1% relative to 2022 (following increases of 5.4% and 1.9% in 2021 and 2022, respectively)…

…Although the trend is upwards, the pace of growth has been slowing, suggesting GLOBAL EMISSIONS MIGHT HAVE PLATEAUED.”
