Named after the character from The Tempest, it was created to study the ionosphere.
Meant to operate for a year, its lifespan was extended after radiation disabled its timer.

#OnThisDay in 1967, Soyuz 1 launched. 🚀
Soyuz spacecraft are still used to send astronauts and cosmonauts into space as recently as March 2024, though have been updated and redesigned since then.
