Drummer and percussionist Joe Porcaro was born on this day in 1930. The father of Jeff, Mike and Steve Porcaro, he is aboard the boat in his own right with credits that include “Toto IV”, Boz Scaggs’ “Silk Degrees” and Lee Ritenour’s “Rit”. He passed away in 2020 at age 90.

Keyboardist Chuck Leavell was born on this day in 1952. Leavell was a member of the Allman Brothers Band from 1972-76 but left to found Sea Level, a jazz fusion offshoot of the Allman Brothers. Sea Level has a handful of songs aboard the boat including 1978’s “Living in a Dream”

Guitarist Steve Khan was born on this day in 1947 in Los Angeles. The son of lyricist Sammy Cahn, he was a member of the Brecker Brothers Band and frequently worked with Steely Dan. His yacht rock credits include “Peg” and “Glamour Profession” as well as Pages’ “You Need a Hero”.

Jim Keltner was born on this day in 1942. A prolific session drummer, Keltner played drums on Steely Dan’s “Josie”, which included Keltner playing on a garbage can lid. Of the track, Keltner said “the beauty of those guys is that they truly wanted something weird.”

“Ride Like the Wind” by Christopher Cross peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on this day in 1980. Personnel includes Michael McDonald, Lenny Castro and Michael Omartian. It was the first of four top ten singles for Cross and is essential yacht rock.

Well that would make this the 50th anniversary of yacht rock music. I guess April 25th is yacht rock’s birthday.

Maxus lead singer Jay Gruska was born on this day in 1952. Maxus only released one album, and it is loaded with yacht rock including “Nobody’s Business”, “Your Imagination” and “Keep a Light On”. Gruska is also aboard the boat as a solo artist with his 1984 single “Cancun”.

Paul Davis was born on this day in 1948 in Meridian, Mississippi. Davis was a successful pop artist who transitioned into country music, and along the way climbed aboard the boat with “Cool Night”, “Let Me Know if it’s Over” and “Do You Believe in Love”. He died April 22, 2008.

Damn, what a song. The weekend has truly begun.

Today in Yacht Rock

Soul and R&B singer Luther Vandross was born on this day in 1951. His 1981 single, “Never Too Much”, crossed over into yacht rock. Though it is primarily an R&B song, it is jazzy enough to make it onto the boat. Vandross passed away in 2005.
