Thomas Pennant's travels record several eighteenth-century celebrations on May 1st

Here he is, for instance, with an important record of 'Bel-tein' celebrations surviving near Keswick in the Lake District

Thomas Pennant's eighteenth-century travel books are *not* going to help advertise Scottish Whisky:

'...the inhabitants [are] mad enough to convert their bread into poison, distilling annually six thousand bolls of grain into whisky'

Don't get bitten by a viper on eighteenth-century Islay in the Hebrides: according to Thomas Pennant, the local 'infallible' treatment was a 'poultice of human ordure' (i.e. excrement)

The project 'Curious travellers' is underway at Natural History Museum

Thanks to funding from the AHRC, 'Curious travellers' has recently begun a second phase, which will produce the first ever scholarly editions of Thomas Pennant’s Tours of Wales and Scotland.
