This would be big news on any other day. FSA reform has long been an area of bipartisan consensus (it certainly was during HEA reauth convos spanning previous 2 Admins). Overhauling the statute is badly needed.

Much of the national discussion around the troubled FAFSA rollout has focused on high school seniors. But current college students are struggling with the same issues, and many feel abandoned in the scramble to help applicants.

This week, the House marks up a 2024 Farm Bill that cuts $27 billion from SNAP by limiting updates to the Thrifty Food Plan. The bill also fails to address outdated & harmful rules that exacerbate food insecurity for low-income college students. politico.com/newsletters/weā€¦

Bill text confirms: House Ag Chair Thompsonā€™s farm bill would take away ~$30B in SNAP benefits from millions of families over the next 10 yrs per CBO, by blocking benefits from keeping pace w/ the cost of a healthy, realistic diet. This is unacceptable; Congress should reject it.

Shrinking the *availability* of student loan borrowing without substantially reducing the *need* to borrow for college (via lower prices) only serves to constrain access for already-marginalized students. Enrollment would plummet and U.S. CBO should release those estimates.

Debt-averse populations will be severely impacted by this spike in interest rates, exacerbating basic needs insecurity and further depressing enrollment. A big headwind for colleges and families alike.

In 2023, half of all states still funded public higher education at a lower level than in 2008. This means that 25 state still haven't recovered from the Great Recession and would need to increase their funding to public higher education in order to do so.
