Lovely article in Quanta Magazine about our recent neutral hypothesis explaining why prokaryotes have never evolved complex multicellularity.
This isn't the simplest story to explain, and Veronique Greenwood did a great job making it widely accessible.

Our paper on the meaning of oral bacteria in feces is out in Nature Microbiology ! We suggest their increased relative abundance in the gut is due to depleted gut-resident bacteria, not their active growth. Huge thanks to Thierry Rolling , Ana, Tobias Hohl MD, PhD, Joao, and all collaborators!
