With his offensive word the Pope was I think trying to express “campness”. The camp subculture of many seminaries is shocking, as Donald Cozzens famously pointed out back in 2000 with his “lavender rectories” image. Bishops are concerned about it. It’s not about being gay per se.

This is the point. It’s the subculture he is concerned about.

He said this before in the interview-book with Fernando Prado Ayuso on religious life, La Fuerza de la Vocación. His concern is with gay men seeing the priesthood as a way of living out their sexuality, and the gay subculture in many seminaries (linked to clericalism).

What surprised me most was that the opinion Massimo Faggioli expressed in Commonweal Magazine was far less capable of being defamatory than Bishop Robert Barron false accusation last summer that the Cardinal organizer of WYD English in Lisbon was guilty of the heresy of religious indifferentism.
