Setting off our 2nd year Oxford Earth Sciences undergrads with a small mapping exercise on Achmelvich peninsula. Archean rocks in the sunshine - what could be better?! 😎

What is Earth Sciences? How can you study it at university? How do planets make magnetic fields? If you're a secondary school student interested in any of these questions come to Oxfordshire STEM forum tomorrow hosted Magdalen College School, Oxford. There will be a meteorite ☄️and cake 🍰!

I have a research group!!! 🥰🥳😵‍💫

Kicking off the new academic year with a pub lunch before we start magnet-bothering in earnest...

Watch this space for research updates on magnetism in subduction zones, stony-iron meteorites, asteroids and early Earth!

I'll soon be back to teaching Oxford Earth Sciences 1st years phase diagrams via the medium of cats. Unfortunately my Greek field assistant can't make it, but he was very helpful with the 4th years last week.

(Also, new headshot?!)

Our new paper on using U-Pb dating of magnetite for paleomagnetic applications is out!

We show how under certain metamorphic conditions we can recover the age of magnetization in BIF samples, allowing us to interpret the age of CRMs 😎

A fantastic few days of volcanology in Santorini with David Pyle and Oxford Earth Sciences 4th years comes to an end 🇬🇷😞

We've had great fun looking at all sorts of eruptive products, and assessing the hazard Santorini poses today and in the future 🌋

🚨Paper alert! Claire Nichols, Conall Mac Niocaill and I have studied the magnetism of the meteorite to help better understand the magnetic behaviour of the protoplanetary disk: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11… Turns out the disk's field was seemingly pretty intense!☄️🪐
