Ryan wrote that the 'entire episode was upsetting, frightening, and sad.'

Worth noting that the episode would not have occurred had state police not been ordered to break up the encampment.

Me: They were peacefully protesting. Like literally doing nothing because it’s 57 degrees and raining.

Them: But they had tents.

It really amazes me how countries that were hostage under the Soviet Union and lived under horrific brutality fight for democracy. Meanwhile some in the U.S. and certain European countries race towards authoritarianism. Nothing makes sense

Shame on whoever called in the State Police to UVA today. This looks like the kind of political theatre a right-wing governor would do.

Nothing says “I’m a tough guy” quite like calling in police in riot gear to deal with 20 kids in REI tents singing songs and studying.

If tear gas is banned for soldiers in war, why should we accept its usage on civilians in streets??? Completely insane that this was ever allowed.

I think it’s high fucking time we update the Chemical Weapons Convention to ***exclude*** the exception for domestic riot control, don’t y’all?

If you oppose fascism who have to oppose police. The same cops that let Nazis march around Charlottesville seven years ago with torches, eventually killing Heather Heyer, are attacking, macing, and arresting UVA students for opposing genocide right now. This is policing.

Take me off of the alert system.

This is like pulling the fire alarm, knowing there was no fire, and then frantically running around telling people you are getting things under control.

If this turns out to be true, I’ll be incredibly disappointed in UVA admin - a group of leaders I’ve long held in high regard.

Enforcing a policy = reasonable.

Changing a policy so you can enforce it with police action hours later = terrible.

as always, i’m just the note taker. here to type fast and bear witness. usually it’s just at the most boring city government meeting imaginable, today it was the incredible courage & resolve of the student protesters who continue to demand that UVA divest from genocide.

This is my second time washing chemical weapons deployed by the Cville police out of someone’s eyes, which should be 0% of my practice as an ID doctor

i guess glenn youngkin finished his european tour and decided to re-engage with his constituents in the most american way possible: police brutality

there was no disruption until police showed up. the students were quietly studying and resting in their tents. it’s a cold wet day. some students in the library across the street didn’t even know there was a protest until 50 cops cars rolled up. now there is a disruption.
