Here we show that prior to 2022, the metabolite Lac-Phe was mis-annotated in Metabolon, Inc. datasets as “1-carboxyethylphenylalanine.” We use this information to identify physiologic urine Lac-Phe transporters. Incredible detective work by Veronica Li biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

This thread doing the rounds saying that we’ve got very few ways to extend lifespan in mice is basically accurate, a bit depressing…but probably not as bad for the field of aging biology overall as you might think!

Let me explain…

Cultured Cells in standard plastics can actually be Hypoxic & lactate-producing

It matters how High the medium level is in your dish/well!🤯
The medium as liquid phase creates a steep oxygen gradient......

33~50 µL per 96-well make your cells happily oxygenated (Have you added…

Let's start using responsible language in the longevity field. Improving an epigenetic risk profile is not 'reversing biological aging' any more than improving other biomarkers that correlate with health. The alternative is that 'biological aging' becomes meaningless.

real time voice translation seems like a great use case for Meta AR glasses. Eye tracking plus translation AI to automatically detect conversation partner and translate. I would buy in a heartbeat. Is this an edge-compute issue?

is it a postdoc shortage or is it just private capture of the public research workforce in response to poor federal and state support?

Thrilled to share that my lab is looking for postdocs! In partnership with Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, we're focusing on developing massive biomedical foundation models to create an AI-powered virtual cell. Dream of harnessing the power of 1,000 H100s? Apply now at: snap.stanford.edu/apply/index-po…

Really interesting report on the phenotype of human GDF15 knockouts. Certainly a trend towards higher BMI and fat mass in these individuals....

faster than light travel. simulated universes. nanobot swarms. many hallmarks of sci-fi will be much harder to achieve than functional immortality, yet it is rarely if ever imagined. Why are we so much worse at imagining bio sci-fi?

Congrats to Tony Wyss-Coray and new Penn Medicine EVDCSO faculty member Michael Haney on their latest tour de force linking ApoE genotype to dysfunctional lipid accumulation in microglia in AD. Trainees, check this guy out! nature.com/articles/s4158…

See this call for a Program Manager at ARPA-H. The directors there have been putting the word out for several months that they really want one who's a longevity expert. Someone just told me that they said it again recently at JPM. Get applying! arpa-h.gov/careers/progra…

In science, there are more high quality funding proposals than there is money to fund them, so grants/awards are some combination of random and nepotistic. This is widely understood to be the case. Why not try an actual lottery for apps above some quality lvl to award funding?

What are the best AI research assistants? Would love a tool that I could ask questions like 'find papers with experiment x in model system y', or 'has anyone published x + y + z'? Currently using Consensus and its great but fails this type of task most of the time.

Best evidence i’ve seen so far for taking microplastics seriously
