On 16 October 1886 the Inversnaid Glasgow registered ship left Cardiff for Singapore laden with coal. It foundered off the Hen & Chickens Rocks near North Light during a severe gale & was lost. All thirty crew perished

Fixed to a massive fallen slab within V C quarry is an engraved inscription memorial slab dedicated to John Harman. He received a Victoria Cross for his heroism during the Second World War. ‘At the going down of the sun & in the morning we will remember them’.

The lighthouse Keepers’ quarters were built to withstand the ‘full onslaught of Atlantic weather’. Built of Cyclopean blocks of granite the quarters are divided into Lower & Upper flats with six feet wide fireplace
