Today’s Paris conference on Sudan has given visibility to a neglected crisis; reaffirmed the need for a political, not a military solution; and mobilized €2 billion to help those impacted including displaced and refugees. Tomorrow in Paris states and organizations will gather to discuss war-torn #Sudan — a unique chance to re-launch peace efforts and increase humanitarian aid, which remains very inadequate.

I welcome the adoption of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum by the European Parliament, a big step forward towards a more effective, shared asylum system.
The Pact must now be implemented upholding the principles of refugee protection: UNHCR stands ready to support.

Wishing a blessed #EidAlFitr to Muslims celebrating around the world — and even more so to those who won’t be able to celebrate because of war, violence and displacement.
May they also find peace, and hope for a better future.
A day in Berlin allows one to appreciate the quality of Germany’s aid engagement.
Thanks to Niels Annen 🇪🇺 and Bundesentwicklungsministerium for
discussing how to make support for refugees sustainable as global contributions decrease. And grateful to GermanForeignOffice for remaining a strong UNHCR partner.
As we strive to help refugees and displaced people in a more sustainable manner, the role of the World Bank and other development organizations is more important than ever.
Thank you Anna Bjerde for your leadership in ensuring that our partnership remains strong and effective.
Sad to say goodbye to a colleague and friend who has made us proud to serve the United Nations in these troubled times. We wish you all the best as you move on in life, Martin — and, most sincerely, thank you.
Don’t believe politicians using elections to stigmatize refugees and promise to “get rid of all immigrants”. They are just after your votes.
We can deal effectively with people on the move and respect their rights instead of invoking brutal measures which are wrong and useless.
An honour and a pleasure to meet Felipe Paullier, who leads the United Nations Youth Office. I told him
he can count on UNHCR’s strong support in ensuring that youth issues and the participation of young people in decision making on crucial global matters are truly part of the UN agenda.
