The earliest press mention of Broadley Brothers that I can find, is this one from the East Grinstead Observer of 7 August 1897, when they donated a prize to the local volunteers.

Pleased to see that there will be 'Accessible Access' on some services. Inaccessible access wouldn't be very good, but I know what you mean, I think.πŸ€”

So proud and honoured to be the new Mayor of East Grinstead. The Mayoral charity is Being Neighbourly and I'm raising money to buy a trishaw to take our elderly and disabled community on bicycle adventures. It will be an epic year. So excited.

On this day in 1846, George Pobgee died, at the age of 23. He had publicly expressed scepticism about religion, so the vicar refused to allow him to be buried in the family vault. He was buried in front of Zion Chapel instead, his well-attended funeral being on May 23rd. [Hills]

Less than 100 years ago, East Grinstead residents were familiarising themselves with crystal set technology. The word 'radio' is used here, but most people called it the 'wireless' in those days - a word that has a wider meaning now. [East Grinstead Observer, 5th February 1925].

An archive photo from the days when one could hop on a train at East Grinstead, and hop off at Brighton, Lewes or Tunbridge Wells etc. No date, but I should think it's mid/late 1950s. Note the high level station crossing the low level and the original Victorian station building.

Newbridge mill (previous post) is very close to where the first blast furnace in England stood, just 5 miles from East Grinstead. It was powered by the same stream, which also flows beneath the Pooh Sticks bridge. It's not easy to think of Ashdown Forest as an industrial site.

Day 2 of National Mills Weekend. Here's Newbridge watermill on Ashdown Forest. This one is not open to the public, but there are other watermills and windmills in the area that will be open today. A day out with a difference. Sussex list and details here: sussexmillsgroup.org.uk/nmw.htm
