Congrats not only to the winner and those shortlisted—these are all terrific books—but goodness the citation written about each book is beautifully done & a real service to the profession. Thank you, Frank Bongiorno & Grace Karskens!!

One of the sorrows of historian Lyndall Ryan's death is that she will never compete the biography of her mother Edna Ryan. Lyndall visited the ANU History Department in 2003 to work on her biography, but Windschuttle's attack on her Tasmanian work sideswiped her. A great loss.

Vale. An immense loss to the Australian historical profession. A marvelous obituary for Lyndall Ryan from her friend and colleague, Ann Curthoys. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Colleagues, historiography teaching! How do you approach it? Any feedback on my rough sketch below v welcome. It’s part lecture, seminar, case studies & group work for 3rd year undergrad. Haven’t quite found a place for Greg Dening yet 😳 & wanting it to be rich & inclusive

It’s so good to see public attention on this issue. Our universities spend more than $1b per year on publishing and subscription fees, to publish research funded by Australian taxpayers, to companies which make huge profits from free academic labour: theguardian.com/australia-news…

Wow there is ‘new federal regulations that require museums to obtain consent from tribes before displaying or performing research on cultural items’ nytimes.com/2024/01/26/art…

Early data from my research about academic blogging indicates that policymakers and policy advocates periodically cite research from blogs – which are, crucially, almost exclusively open access – in reports.

This appears to be consistent w/ what the Chief Scientist is saying ⤵️

I’ve been thinking about these 1980s WA beer adds all night & the memories shared by a legendary brewer. The masculinity of beer drinking before craft beers / Europeans beers arrived is quite something
