Portrait of the 2024A Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen cub from this morning. The cubs are now 88 days old, and twice this week I have observed two of the other cubs still being allowed to suckle by their mother. All six members of the family were present together yesterday evening.

The young Red Fox Vulpes vulpes omitted from yesterday's posts was the 2024B dog fox cub. He hasn't really posed for still photographs before, but he did today. Quite distinctly different from his sisters facially. He is probably ranked at No. three in their hierarchy.

The dominant 2024A Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen cub has always been more bold and adventurous than her three siblings. She was watching the (completely unconcerned) House Sparrows Passer domesticus using a fat-feeder yesterday.

The 2024D Red Fox Vulpes vulpes vixen cub, now identifiable by a play-fight inflicted notch in her right ear (useful for ID, as she looks similar to the 2024A vixen cub), is the smallest and most submissive member of this year's litter. She should be OK if she sticks to the rules

The Red Fox Vulpes vulpes cubs are now 81 days old, and they are becoming easier to separate, by appearance and character. These photos are of the three vixens, 2024D, 2024C, and the dominant female 2024A respectively. Their brother emerged too late to be photographed yesterday.

A recently arrived Common Swift Apus apus, one of many seen flying into a fierce, cold wind at Staines Reservoir yesterday. It must have come as a bit of a shock! Cropped, and auto-adjusted for shadows & highlights.

Red Fox Vulpes vulpes cubs reserve a particular enthusiasm for greeting their fathers, as illustrated by the reactions of the 2024B dog fox cub and the more reserved 2024D vixen cub yesterday. I hadn't seen their dad since 9th April. The 4 cubs are now all identifiable.

The good condition of this Peacock Butterfly Aglais io, photographed in a small London park earlier today, suggests that it has been mostly sheltering from the poor weather since it emerged from hibernation. Hardly any wing margin damage, and not many scales missing either.
