U.S. officials say they can handle many crises at once. Some allies are not so sure and worry that the longer the war in Gaza goes on, the harder it gets for the U.S. to fulfill its promises in the Indo-Pacific. nytimes.com/2023/11/09/wor…

I wonder if this is where Sydney is heading, or if the obsession with owning is too strong nytimes.com/2023/11/06/rea…

A lot has changed, a lot of tension remains. If Oz is a bellwether for China relations, it points to a future of low to moderate expectations and celebrating what used to be just boring and normal. My latest: nytimes.com/2023/11/03/wor…

Love that Kid Laroi and John Leguizamo are on the list (along with our own boss, Joe Kahn) nytimes.com/2023/10/25/us/…

This is a clear and dangerous act of escalation. For context and an idea of why this matters, see my earlier story on the militarization of China's Coast Guard and the race across Asia to keep up and push back nytimes.com/2023/06/12/wor…

In his new column, Douthat says this without offering any evidence: 'There are good reasons to think that China is open to invading Taiwan in the near future....' Many experts studying Xi & the PLA disagree. And so does the US intel community. Story: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Happens to me too in Australia and around the Indo-Pacific. American dysfunction boggles the mind, as does the fact that so many Americans don’t notice how bad it is or demand sanity. Chickens in the pot, they struggle to see the boiling mess around them as well as outsiders.

I went to Vietnam. And found Australia — a personal tale of a hotel and a war and some wine. nytimes.com/2023/10/20/wor…

A win with caveats: “Sophisticated arguments simply don’t fly,” Mr. Debski said. “What I see, unfortunately, is a global trend introducing populist arguments to any political debate by all sides. We are all influenced by the TikTok invasion of politics.” nytimes.com/2023/10/17/wor…

Such a San Francisco solution to San Francisco problem. If only whimsy and a pen could fix more than our gaze. nytimes.com/2023/10/13/opi…

“Dysfunction is the new normal.” ⁦Peter Baker⁩ on the capital that Americans expect to be as immature and crisis-driven as it keeps managing to be. nytimes.com/2023/10/01/us/…

This only changes, I think, when there’s GOP consensus about reforming how America’s electoral system works. When there are incentives for extremes (gerrymandering; barriers to voting) this is what you get. nytimes.com/2023/09/23/us/…

Now that I live in Australia, which rarely tips but has high mandated wages, I see these complaints quite differently. The US system is the problem here and focusing on one jackass distracts from the bigger problem: American wages for hospitality are bullshit.

Joe really nails it here; Jann barrelled ahead without questioning the divisive impact, mistaking personal opinion for genius. A Boomer legacy in every way.
