The Man with the Getaway Face, from 1963, the 2nd Parker novel by Donald E. Westlake (as Richard Stark). Hardboiled crime featuring one of the great anti-heroes. The real focus here is not the heist but a plastic surgery job.

A charming bitter-sweet coming-of-age movie. It's a comedy about sex, but not a sex comedy in the 1970s sense.

Armed with little more than coloured lights, a fog machine, and some styrofoam rocks, Mario Bava pretty much invents the gothic sci-fi horror with PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES (1965). A beautiful exercise in minimalism, and a masterclass in no-budget lighting and camerawork.

Pickup Alley is a 1957 British crime thriller about a narcotics agent, directed by John Gilling. Victor Mature, Anita Ekberg and Trevor Howard are all excellent. Solidly plotted and well-crafted.

California (1947) a western directed by John Farrow starring Ray Milland and Barbara Stanwyck which I haven't seen. But I like westerns and I like those two stars. Anyone seen this one? Is it worth trying to track down?

Adamant Lives! was charming and delightful entertainment. Gerald Harper and Georgina Jones made a great team. No wonder the BBC destroyed half the episodes. The BBC is not in the business of entertaining people. It wasn't then, and it isn't now.
