Does anything feel more like a winter wonderland than a conifer forest in the snow. Planted conifer forests get a bad rep, but they come into their own during the colder months, argues Country Walking's Matthew Pike. Read all about them in the January issue.

Who on earth is Egeria the Pilgrim? We hadn't heard of her either, but she's the historical figure TV presenter and historian Bettany Hughes would most like to go for a walk with. Find out why in our interview with Bettany in our January issue.

In 1800, a 15-year-old girl called Mary Jones walked 26 miles to buy a bible she'd been saving for since she was 9. She lived the rest of her life in poverty, but the repercussions of her walk are being felt to this day. Read Mary's story in the January issue of Country Walking.

Believe it or not, you can actually walk through the chasm behind this slab of rock, plucked from the hillside by a glacier. The formation is known as The Whangie, and is found in the Kilpatrick Hills, north of Glasgow

Not all Lake District fells require aching limbs to reach the top. Latterbarrow is just 803ft high, but offers views that include Old Man of Coniston, Crinkle Crags and the Langdale Pikes. We climb this fab little peak in our January issue.

It might be just a small outlier to a humble set of hills, but when you're face-to-face with Dumgoyne, north of Glasgow, there's nothing 'little' about it.

This is Loch Glass – a peaceful, seldom-visited loch north of Ben Wyvis in the Scottish Highlands, where you might catch a glimpse of pine martens.

In the early 19th century, these cliffs reminded their owner-of-the-time of the outcrops he'd seen along the Rhine Valley in Germany. So he built a fairytale castle to match.

The result? Kinnoull Tower near Perth, and we take a walk there in our December issue.

The ultimate reality TV show was once filmed here... no... not Big Brother!

Springwatch has been bringing real-life drama into our homes for 18 years. And for 3 years it was based down by the estuary there at RSPB Ynys-hir, Mid Wales.

Ever seen a mysterious shadowy figure with a rainbow halo? The strange phenomenon is called a Brocken Spectre, where your shadow (yes, it's you!) is cast by the low sun on a bank of mist below you.

Broadway Tower – built because Lady Coventry wanted to find out if she could see it from her house. She could! It's one of more than 1700 follies built across Britain for no particular reason. Perhaps that's why we love them and have a feature about them in our November issue

One of the great walking experiences is when the world turns upside down and you can wander with the clouds beneath your feet. Cool temperatures, high pressure and low winds in the early morning are the ideal conditions for this.
