I think this is archaic, dated thinking.
It’s not 1952. More families have two working parents — or are simply single parent households.
To give parents 15 hours notice that school isn’t open can truly economically impact people.

Tell Ed Gainey to quit being a puppet for the SEIU, come to the table and also ask the other big non-profits for money (besides UPMC) and UPMC would cut the city a check tomorrow.

Ed Gainey should send $18k in p-cards to the Pittsburgh Public Schools so they can buy some window A/C units for these classrooms.

Public school is a publicly funded entity — that said, the school building should be open barring something catastrophic or dangerous.
It being 83 degrees isn’t, as evidenced by generations going into the same buildings under the same conditions.

Remote school — particularly for those in elementary — is a total waste of time.
On top of that, it forces many parents who would otherwise be at work to miss a day (and sometimes income) as they need to also stay home.

Some Pittsburgh Public Schools are going to remote learning with it being 83 for a high today.
Two things:
-old infrastructure doesn’t allow some buildings to be retrofitted w AC.

BUT

-COVID also made decisions makers way too quick to cancel/adjust things. It’s epidemic now.

In my time doing this, this call is the most chilling I’ve received. A 1975 murderer was let out of jail on “compassionate release” because he’s paralyzed and going to die soon. A woman called and explained her close connection to the murdered man.

It’s almost as if the District Attorney’s Office was doing their job and trying to keep someone convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, uh, in prison for life.
That’s what people who understand consequences do.
